Try to see the bright side:
If we bomb Mecca and destroy their most holy place of worship, Muslims will have to adopt the Jewish tradition of crushing a glass underfoot at weddings.
Think of the potential benefits for the glass industry, custodial services, and in rare edge cases, the health care industry!

I’m surprised in centuries past no Christian power ever tried to attack Mecca. In the early 16th century, the Portuguese navy achieved mastery in the Indian Ocean. They might have been able to pull off a raid on Mecca if they really wanted to. The only instance I can think of when Mecca was even remotely threatened was when the Crusader Raymond de Chatillon had a small fleet put into Red Sea some time during the 1170’s or 80’s, but they did not accomplish very much before being destroyed.

There are about 1.4 billion Muslims who would disagree with you over the importance of Mecca. A pilgramage to Mecca — called the Hajj — at least once in life is one of the five pillars of Islam; it’s considered the sacred duty of every Muslim who is physically capable of getting there.
