We know these folks. We might work with them or even have them in our own family. We see them at the store or passing by us in the street. We see them on TV. We see them in the comments of this blog. - We see all of them draped in the bumper sticker flag of Bushian freedom. They are part of that 38% - the steadfast defenders of the Leader and the Party - never wavering in their support - faithfully repeating the word of the day, each and every day, day after day. Defiant of facts they repeat the repetition, sitting on conclusions without any regard to their support - simply repeating evidence-free fallacious arguments to prop up their prefabricated determinations.

We see the positions and they just don't seem to follow from the evidence or history or logic. Yet the beat goes on - persistent, ever mindful to stay the course - never surrendering - never conceding defeat - spinning any failure or defeat back upon their enemies. They march, as automatons, to the beat of a faux freedom drumroll of conformity - all the while the true sounds of liberty whither from the relentless attack upon logic and reason.

Somehow these folks, the 38%, must think differently - process information in some other way...Just how can they reach the conclusions they reach? Are they thinking at all?

In a reality based world evidence points the way to conclusions.

Philosoraptor states...

But--of course--this is not how those now in the White House think. They employ what a friend of mine calls "The Method of Inverse Criticism." The rational person inspects evidence and forms his opinions on the basis of that evidence--even if he doesn't like the opinion he is forced to accept. He who employs the MOIC inspects the conclusion first, determines whether he likes it or not, and then accepts or rejects the reasoning accordlingly. This reminds me of several people of my acquaintance who will accept any argument--no matter how patently fallacious--so long as its conclusion is 'God exists,' and who reject any argument--no matter how apparently sound--so long as its conclusion is 'God does not exist.' (I know atheists who do exactly the same thing--by which I mean exactly the opposite thing--of course.)

One is reasonable insofar as one can be moved by reasons--by evidence. But the remaining 38% of the population that does not think Bush is a terrible president is probably the 38% that simply cannot be moved by evidence on this point. I mean, what exactly are they waiting for? Laser base on the moon? Cheney stroking a white cat during the State of the Union address? The Republican Party changing its name to 'The Legion of Doom?'

What will it take?
Hazard a guess anyone?

The rioting around Paris has conservatives creaming their pants over the prospect of a new battlefield in the holy struggle between honest folk and dirty Arabs opening up in France.

Captain Queeg:
Is this the beginning of the war for Eurabia? So far, the purported Islamist leaders of the uprising have kept a low profile, but if this violence proves successful, they will have no hesitation in loudly demanding their spoils of victory: autonomy of authority in the sink estates, a recognition of sharia law in the Muslim enclaves of France, and the creation of de facto proto-states where Islamist lunacy can breed and produce even more Eurabian terrorists. Until the French get serious about protecting themselves and their national interest -- and that means meeting violence with a swift and crushing response, not handwringing and dithering -- the Islamists will grow more and more emboldened by the lack of French will to fight for their own land.
Serves those French bastards right for thumbing their noses at our glorious invasion of Iraq, huh, Queeg?

Numbers Hang From Poll

Congratulations Mr. President, the now poll numbers are out and you have reached a record low for any President in our history. I am sure your trip down to Argentina was an attempt to escape the "negativity" (translated criminality) in Washington and hunker down between tasty meals and snacks, oh and that damned conference at the free trade summit too. Of course the flight there is what the President thought was the "coolest" part of the trip. He's always loved to fly.

But the news at home is as depressing as usual, except the numbers show Bush at an all time low. In fact he is the most dreaded President in the history of the country bar none (since polls have been taken).

Washington Post/ABC brings these not surprising but award winning numbers right to the doorstep of the White House...

Only 39 percent of the public approves of the job Bush is doing overall, and only 20 percent approves strongly -- both all-time lows for Bush in this poll.

Really? You're jiving right? I figured by now it would be a bit lower to make up for the (+ -) of 3%. Overall represents all issues the white house is dealing with. Every little thing. Even indicted high profile top shelf chiefs of staff.

Sixty-eight percent of the public disapproves of the way in which Bush is handling gas prices; 64 percent disapproves of his handling of the war in Iraq; and -- for the first time ever -- a slim majority disapproves of his handling of terrorism.

It's a fact even with our "high" gas prices they are still some of the lowest gas prices on the globe. I give a shrug to shrub on this one. Nice work keeping the gas prices low for all of us despite the fact that most people either don't know it or are used to paying even less than they do now to fill up. And of course poverty stricken citizens that can't afford a car anyway, right? Those below the poverty level that do manage to own a car, well there's not much driving going on.

That 64% number dispproving of his handling of the war is more up to expectations. Putting off revealing (officially) for two weeks that we had broken the 2000 death mark didn't appear to help. Nor did his speeches on his method of fighting terror. Of course that involved repeating again the same tired cliches he has been rattling off squint eyed for the past 4 years. It's not working George. Please rehire those who you have fired, forced to retire and destroyed in the media so that they can come up with the correct plan to fight this war. Poor guidance, poor equipment, poor, poor numbers.

I will predict now that most comments that post on this entry will decry the validity of polls and disparage their value. Most will be from my buddies on the right. All will cheer feverishly polls when the numbers bend their way. And when their man does poorly in the polls they revert to talking point #371: Ignore polls when bad...cheer when good.

Asked if the president is "honest and trustworthy," 58 percent of the public says no.

I'll let the commenters go after this one. It speaks for itself even with the variance.

Doing the people's business indeed. Agenda indeed. There is a clear desire amongst a majority of Americans that what he has done to all of us is wrong. That there are better ways of dealing with problems facing us. Craftier, more intelligent methods of destroying those who would destroy us. An expansion of the special forces elements of the military has finally been brought to public and media view by DOD and this is a good decision. One of the most intelligent things Rumsfeld and his neocompoops have come up with. Unfortunately they are about 4 years late.

Large scale quick insertion, mission specific action and successful removal of troops is an idea that has been used and bandied about since world war two as a way of decreasing the number of cannon fodder deaths in military attacks. The technical know how we have today is perfect for this kind of battle. It puts the choice of when, where and how we attack. On our own terms and not the terroristsand their ever more technical bombs. Granted, there are attacks such as this carried out daily in Iraq and they have been used in every war since WW2. Imagine though a gathering of intell through eye witness accounts, be they on the ground or by drone surveillance. Then a force so fierce and severe as to completely overwhelm anything the enemy can do is brought in. This would be done in multiple locations simultaneously. Imagine having enough special forces to carry out missions like this. Currently the number of special forces is stable with a slight decrease in personnel but with the retirement and discharge of skilled service special forces members (frequently for similar civilian jobs that pay much more) the ever younger special forces on the ground in Iraq are quickly becoming the teachers of the new troops needed for this expansion to take place.

The new poll numbers don't have to go any lower if Bush would make some drastic decisions right now. But he will not. He will continue to embarass the American people with his imitation of some sort of angry, vicious cowpoke.

Nur al-Cubicle - who has been covering the Niger/Yellowcake document scandal better than anyone in the blogosphere - has an excellent review and open questions in a post from earlier today called "Eight Nigergate Questions in Search of an Answer." I am having trouble linking directly to the post proper, so the link above is simply to the front page of her blog. As of this moment the Eight Questions post is the most recent post there.
